Gardening Pots
Choosing Garden Containers

You’ve decided to plant a garden. No garden space? No problem. A container garden will grow in limited space. In your back yard, the deck or patio, hanging baskets, even a window box.

Almost anything can be used for  gardening pots, but there are some things to be considered. Gardening Pots not only need to fit the type of plants or the size of plant you wish to grow, they also must have adequate drainage There are two main types of containers used for gardening pots; those made of porous material and those that are not.  Pots made of porous material will require more watering. This may be an important consideration. If the gardening pot you choose does not have good drainage, holes must be drilled in the bottom or on the side about an inch from the bottom. If this is not possible, the container is not suitable for container gardening.

If you are buying gardening pots for use, you have a wide variety of choices. Pots may be plastic, metal, wood or clay. Plastic can deteriorate quickly in bright sun. Clay is attractive, but tends to dry out quickly. Wood containers are good and can be built to accommodate the space available or  purchased  from a  garden center. Containers such as half barrels, tubs or bushel baskets are attractive and practical. Make sure that the wood does not contain a preservative which can be toxic to plants and people.
Wooden containers can be lined with plastic to prevent deterioration of the container and to reduce watering needs. For many plants, a 5 gallon pail is an ideal gardening pot. It provides sufficient depth for larger vegetable crops, such as tomatoes and peppers and is sturdy enough to support the plant when grown.  Small root vegetables can easily be raised in smaller gardening pots or containers. Your local garden center can help with choices. There are also many companies that have online catalogs you may want to check out. One that offers a wide variety of garden supplies is Gardener's Supply Company, but there are many others.

If you don’t want to buy gardening pots or containers, you can often find them. Discarded wagons, wheelbarrows, pails, watering cans, have all been used successfully as gardening pots. Cement blocks, drain pipes, barrels, kids sand boxes or swimming pools are also suitable. Just remember that all gardening pots require adequate drainage. The size and material of the gardening pot will determine what plants can be grown and the amount of water and sunlight needed for plant growth.  The possibilities are endless. Use your imagination and have fun.
