Compost tumblers are another popular way of making compost. Its popularity can be partially attributed to its ease of use and, more importantly, its ability to turn garden and lawn waste into viable compost in a short length of time. Open bins may take a year or more to decompose to usable compost or mulch unless turned often and moistened properly. A compost tumbler, if used correctly, can produce finished compost in two to three months. Both need to be turned to aerate the material and both methods require moisture. Compost tumblers are easier to keep aerated and there is no need to turn the material manually nor dampen it nearly as often. They are clean and are less likely to attract dogs or other animals. The compost tumbler reduces or eliminates the need to turn the compost and speeds up the decomposition process considerably.
For most backyard gardeners buying a compost tumbler is a better choice. Compost tumblers are available from a large number of sources. Gardener's Supply Company The size of the compost you choose depends on the amount of waste you have to compost.
