Compost Tumblers

Compost tumblers are another popular way of making compost. Its popularity can be partially attributed to its ease of use and, more importantly, its ability to turn garden and lawn waste into viable compost in a short length of time.   Open bins may take a year or more to decompose to usable compost or mulch unless turned often and moistened properly. A compost tumbler, if used correctly, can produce finished compost in two to three months. Both need to be turned to aerate the material and both methods require moisture.

Compost tumblers are easier to keep aerated and there is no need to turn the material manually nor dampen it nearly as often. They are clean and are less likely to attract dogs or other animals. The compost tumbler reduces or eliminates the need to turn the compost and speeds up the decomposition process considerably.   
It is possible to make your own turning unit  or compost tumbler, although it is not as simple to make as compost bins. They can most easily be made out of drums or barrels. The drums are placed horizontally on some kind of stand and have a means of turning the drum to facilitate composting. The size of the compost you choose depends on the amount of waste you have to compost. If the compost tumbler is too big it will take longer to fill and thus longer for you to have usable compost. Ideally, two smaller compost tumblers could keep a fresh supply of  finished compost for your needs.
