The use of compost containers is  an excellent way to create the rich, earthy humus that stimulates plant health and growth.  Compost is an excellent mulch and soil conditioner and it is especially useful in container gardening. It is inexpensive and improves the condition and water retention of the soil. The use of compost containers can help make  this beneficial soil additive easier and faster than Mother Nature can do it alone.

There are many reasons to use compost containers . First, it  is an easy way to make compost which  provides needed nutrients and fertility to soil. Finished compost contains nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. The microorganisms that feed on the organic matter keep the soil fertile and stimulate healthy root development in your garden plants. Secondly, compost is inexpensive to  make since materials otherwise thrown away are used. This includes grass clippings, weeds, garden waste and kitchen scraps such as peelings, fruit cores or other vegetable scraps. Coffee grounds and tea bags are good choices too. For kitchen scraps a small ceramic pot is ideal. It is attractive and controls odor.
When full , simply empty into your outdoor compost container.

 Leaves can be composted too, but do much better if they are ground up or mulched before adding to the compost container. The use of compost containers simply speeds up the natural process of decomposition. A third reason for using compost containers to create compost is that containers prevent the raw materials from being scattered or being blown away and can be concealed or become part of the landscape.

Composting and compost containers can help solve another serious urban problem. Yard waste,  plant material and grass clippings make up a large share of the materials in landfills.  Existing landfills are filling up and the space for new ones is hard to find.  Some cities are reluctant to pick up yard waste. Some cities provide compost sites that can be used by residents to dump their yard waste and grass clippings. These sites turn and care for the piles of raw material.  After a few months the waste has turned into viable compost which residents can use in their own gardens or lawns.

There are many types of compost containers that can be used to make compost. Many people make their own open bin compost. These can be made of wood or wire. This system can be used for coarser material, but takes longer to reduce to usable soil or mulch.  A popular compost container is some type of compost bin. Compost tumblers are more expensive, but also a good choice for compost container because they produce finished compost quickly. Worm composting or vermiculture  is also becoming more common  and usually requires some kind of compost container.
