Compost Bins Now that you have decided to compost in order to enrich your garden soil and help the environment, what is the best way to start the process? Using compost bins is probably the easiest and most common way to begin. The type of compost bin depends on the amount and type of material you will be composting. For the home gardener compost materials are most often grass clippings, garden weeds and refuse and kitchen scraps. Leaves are slow to decompose unless shredded and mixed with other refuse. Simple compost bins can be used to hold yard waste, These may be nothing more than a three sided holding bin made of wood. This type of compost bin is useful if there is sufficient space available. The decomposition process is usually much slower in these open bins, but they require little care and rougher refuse can be used. Another simple, common type of compost bin can be made out of mesh wiring. Any type can be used, but the heavy or coated mesh will last longer. Wire mesh compost bins should be a minimum of at least three feet in diameter.
For faster composting, it is important to turn the pile. Two compost bins make the job easier. Open the first bin and move the partially decomposed material to another compost bin for further decomposing. Many compost bins have a sliding panel at the bottom which permits access to the finished compost which can be removed without disturbing the rest of the container. You can also manually turn the compost with a compost turner. These forked turners are available at local garden centers or online at your favorite garden catalog store. Plans for making your own compost bins are available at your local or state extension service or at your local library or bookstore. If you do not want to make your own compost bin, bins can be purchased from a wide variety of sources. Your local garden shop may carry compost bins or you can order bins from a catalog such as Gardener's Supply Company Your city may help by providing compost bins at reduced prices. You can also check out what is available from other sources online. What ever you choose to do, build or buy, you are making a wise decision. You will be helping the environment and at the same time enhancing your garden experience. |
